WHAT

Fall River Public Schools will hold a ribbon cutting, recognition, and dedication ceremony for The Alfredo P. Alves Playground at the John. J. Doran Community School. A long-time Fall River resident, business leader, city council member, and an advocate for the students at the Doran Community School, Mr. Alves was passionate about the Columbia Street neighborhood. The newly renovated
playground will be dedicated in Alves’ honor as a tribute to his dedication and
commitment, to the school and the community. Al, as he was known, donated
thousands of dollars to the Doran School and he did so without fanfare. He unofficially adopted the school and would host Christmas parties, graduation
dinners, and other fundraisers for the school at his restaurant, Tabacaria Açoreana
(TA). Mr. Alves passed away in May 2019. Funding to renovate the playground
was approved by the Fall River School Committee in 2023. The playground is
designed for children three to six years old and is one of two playgrounds on school
grounds.
