Georgetown Police Investigate Old Bullet Found on Playground at Georgetown School

GEORGETOWN — Chief David Sedgwick and Superintendent Margo Ferrick report that an old and barely identifiable piece of a bullet was found at Penn Brook Elementary School on the morning of Monday, June 3.

The bullet was found by a student on the playground of the school, who reported it to teachers. Consistent with protocols, the district opened an investigation, and contacted Georgetown Police to assist with the investigation.

The investigation, undertaken by School Resource Officer Taylor Ford and the department’s firearms instructor, has determined that the bullet was a spent round that was exposed to the elements for a prolonged period of time.

As a result, the department has determined that there was no threat to either students and teachers at the school or to neighbors.

“I recognize the anxiety that you may feel when receiving news of this nature, so I want to communicate this information to you as quickly as possible,” Superintendent Ferrick said. “I couldn’t be prouder of this response. The student shared the discovery with their teacher, and Georgetown Police promptly attended and accurately assessed the threat posed by the object.”

“Safety at schools is a collaborative effort,” Chief Sedgwick said. “I would like to once again thank the school leadership for leaving nothing to chance, and parents for their role in educating children about the importance of remaining vigilant.”
