Bourne Public School District is delighted to announce a special celebration marking the culmination of a heartwarming year-long pen pal project between kindergarten students from Bournedale Elementary and the residents of Keystone Place senior residence.
The event will take place on June 6 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature a pizza party, craft activities, and a sing-along session.
Media are invited to capture this special occasion.
Bournedale Elementary teacher Kristi Hawkes rekindled the project idea from a similar project she initiated in 2013 while working at another school. The revival was made possible thanks to the efforts of Hawkes and the Keystone Place Executive Director Dottie Griffith and Activity Team Leader Jessica Lima.
Throughout the school year, the students and senior residents have exchanged letters, drawings, and crafts, fostering a unique intergenerational connection that has enriched the lives of both young and old.
“The exchange has been incredibly meaningful for everyone involved, teaching our students valuable lessons in empathy and acceptance,” said Hawkes. “Seeing the joy and anticipation on the kids’ faces as they receive letters from their senior friends is truly heartwarming.”
The upcoming event will celebrate this year’s successful exchanges and strengthen the bonds between the students and their senior pen pals. Bourne Public Schools is proud to support initiatives highlighting the power of community and lifelong learning.
“We are thrilled to host this celebration and look forward to continuing this beautiful partnership,” said Lima. “The project brings joy to our residents and demonstrates the profound impact of connecting generations.”
Parent volunteers and district administrators will also attend to support the students and celebrate this meaningful collaboration.
Interested media are asked to RSVP Tom Peine at thomas.peine@jgpr.net no later than Thursday, June 5.
