MANSFIELD – Superintendent Teresa Murphy is pleased to announce the Mansfield Public School’s new mission and vision statements as well as a new set of core values.
Superintendent Murphy appointed fifth-grade teacher Dr. Rayna Freedman to lead a working group charged with developing the mission and vision statements. The district’s statements had not been reviewed or revised in over twenty years. The committee consisted of 25-30 members including faculty, staff, administrators, students, parents/guardians, and community representatives. Beginning in August 2023, the group met five times during the year and created group norms, examined the work of other districts, worked in small groups, and shared their thoughts on the future of the district. The broader school community provided input through online surveys which was used to refine the draft mission and vision statements. Dr. Freedman and her team presented both the mission and vision to the School Committee who then voted unanimously to approve them.
Mansfield Public Schools Mission Statement
The Mansfield Public Schools supports each student so they feel recognized and valued. All students are empowered academically, socially, and emotionally so they can reach their maximum potential.
Mansfield Public Schools Vision Statement
The Mansfield Public Schools will foster an environment where all students share a sense of belonging and experience academic and personal growth. We will inspire and empower active and engaged learners, citizens, innovators, and communicators.
Once the mission and vision statements had been written and approved, a subset of that group composed of faculty, staff, administrators, students, and parents/guardians was formed to update the district’s core values. The group met four times to develop their ideas and then identified five principles that are highly valued in the work that is being done to educate Mansfield students.
Core Values of the Mansfield Public Schools
Belonging: We build a supportive and understanding community through kindness, respect, and empathy.
Collaboration: We work together, share ideas, respect each other, and celebrate our achievements as a community.
Curiosity: We question, explore, and discover in order to foster a love of learning, not just for school but for life.
Integrity: We are honest and do the right thing, even when no one is watching.
Resilience: We adapt and grow in the face of adversity, always persevering and continuing to try.
Students from Qualters Middle School and Mansfield High School served as representatives for the student body throughout the process. “By actively engaging student voices in crafting our district’s mission statement, vision statement, and core values the district ensures that our educational goals resonate deeply with the needs, aspirations, and perspectives of the very individuals we are committed to serving,” said Dr. Freedman.
“I would like to thank the working groups for their collaborative efforts to present our community with updated mission and vision statements and a set of core values as the district moves into the future,” said Superintendent Murphy. “The participants were passionate and engaged in rich conversation throughout the process. We are proud to present these statements which coincide with the work of the MPS DEI Team, the work of the Inclusion, Culture, Unity (ICU) Teams, the District Improvement Plan, and the Student Opportunity Act Plan.”
