HULL — Superintendent Judith Kuehn and Principal Kyle Shaw are pleased to debut an ongoing project in which Jacobs Elementary School students transform ocean waste into artwork.

Media members are invited to attend a live viewing of Jacobs Elementary School students using items from the 40 bags of trash they collected from Nantasket Beach last month and turning them into works of art that will be turned into a permanent art exhibit at the school.

WHEN:

Friday, May 17 from 1-2 p.m.

WHERE:

Lillian M. Jacobs Elementary School, 18 Harborview Rd

WHAT:

During the first week of April, approximately 55 sixth-grade students at the Jacobs School took part in a beach cleanup initiative led by science teacher Heather Weber and parent volunteer/local artist Jackie Kilroe.

During the clean-up, students collected over 40 bags of trash that had washed up along the shore from A Street Beach to XYZ Beach. The trash was then transported back to the Jacobs School.

In the weeks following, students worked in pairs to sort and document the collected trash before submitting the data to the Center for Coastal Studies for further analysis.

For the next several weeks, students will be repurposing the trash to create handmade sea creatures during Emily Pestone’s and Kate Cicalese’s art classes.

Students will be given creative freedom to design their individual pieces of art, which will be incorporated into a larger display. The artwork will then be hung from the ceiling at the Jacobs School for years to come.
