ATTLEBORO — Superintendent David Sawyer and Principal Lisa Boyle are pleased to share that two students have created a third-grade writing club at Studley Elementary School.
Third-grade students Isabella Mistler and Aubrey Henriquez wrote a letter to Principal Boyle in early April with the idea of creating an after-school writing club. The students met multiple times with Principal Boyle to discuss their ideas and brainstorm options. They created a flyer and pitched the club to their teachers who were in full support of it.
The 12 member club meets weekly on Fridays and students are encouraged to attend based on their love of writing, being caught up on their regular schoolwork and exhibiting consistent Studley Star behavior of acting respectful, responsible and safe.
At meetings, club members generate a list of ideas to write about, pick a topic and write pieces based on their chosen topics. Students edit each other’s works, provide feedback and continue to add to their own pieces. One of the goals of the club is to have a published piece that the club members can share with the community in a newsletter to families and staff.
“I was very excited to work with Isabella and Aubrey when they approached me with their idea,” Principal Boyle said. “Their passion for writing and determination to share it with their peers led to a club where students meet to be creative and share ideas. I’m proud of them for sharing their vision with me and working hard to make it happen.”
Superintendent Sawyer said, “Isabella’s and Aubrey’s innovative spirit to start this club at Studley Elementary has been very impressive to see. Their writing club is proof that when students develop ideas and create plans, they can make them happen. I can’t wait to read the stories they produce.”
