NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department arrested and charged a man with Driving Under the Influence and several other offenses after he allegedly drove erratically down Main Street, passed the Newport Police Station, and nearly flipped his pickup truck on Causeway.
As a result, KALEB EARLE, 23, OF NEWPORT was charged with:
- Grossly Negligent Operation
- Operating Under the Influence
- Driving with a Criminally Suspended License
- Making a False Report to Police
- Reckless Endangerment
On Tuesday, April 30, shortly after 8 p.m., Newport Police were at the police station, located at 222 Main St., when Sgt. Charles Moulton reported that he heard and extremely loud engine exhaust noise and loud engine acceleration. He viewed the station’s security cameras and observed a silver Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driving rapidly. The truck crossed the double yellow line and drove for some time in the oncoming traffic lane. Sgt. Moulton radioed to other police on the roadway and advised them of the situation.
Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but it accelerated onto Access Road, nearly flipping, with at least one wheel coming off the ground. The vehicle eventually stopped for police.
EARLE is known to Newport Police. An investigation indicated that his license is currently suspended, and after he failed multiple field sobriety tests, EARLE blew a .124 on a preliminary breath test.
He was arrested without further incident. EARLE was held on a $2,500 bond and is expected to be arraigned in Orleans District Court on Wednesday.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
