NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is proud to share that Grade 10student Noah Clark has been named a STEM Champion as part of the National STEM Challenge.
The National STEM Challenge gives students in Grades 6-12 a mission to craft a STEM project that tackles a real-world challenge. Choosing from one of the themes provided, students use the scientific method or engineering design process to create their project.
Student must then create a presentation that outlines their ideas and showcases how their design was tested or constructed. The best projects from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories were named Challenge Finalists and were allowed to advance to the next level by submitting a video about their design.
Clark chose the theme “Tech for Good,” which challenges students to utilize AI, data visualization, robotics, or other technologies to develop a program or device that
tackles real-world challenges. Projects in this category could focus on solving problems such as closing the digital divide, ensuring equal access, and/or addressing racial biases in the realm of technology.
Clark’s project consisted of building a custom controller using an Arduino Pro-MINI that emulates a standard USB Joypad. The project used programming for the Arduino, electronics and PCB design to connect the buttons and sliders, and 3D Printing for the enclosure. The controller was built for the Kearsarge team robot but could be modified to serve as a controller for people with limited mobility.
As an award for being selected as a STEM Champion, Clark received travel and accommodations for himself and a parent/guardian to the National STEM Festival in Washington, D.C.
On April 12, Clark joined approximately 140 National Champions at the National STEM Festival, where he was able to showcase his projects to some of the nation’s most influential leaders. The Festival was co-presented by the U.S. Department of Education and EXPLR.
“Congratulations to Noah on this outstanding accomplishment. To be selected as a STEM Champion out of hundreds of students across the nation demonstrates his talent and dedication to engineering,” said Superintendent Feneberg. “All of us in the Kearsarge community are excited to see what he achieves in the future!”
