ATTLEBORO — Superintendent David Sawyer is pleased to share that Attleboro Public Schools recently held its second annual A Night to Discover event.

On Thursday, March 14, more than 1,500 family members, community members and local and state elected officials attended the event at the high school. The event provided members of the APS community an opportunity to celebrate students of all grades as they shared their successes and learning experiences and displayed the work they’ve completed throughout the school year.

Presentations were arranged throughout the Attleboro High School cafeteria, gym and principal’s lobby. Families and community members were able to engage with the students as they explained their projects and reflected on the learning process.

The event was set up in a gallery style with a total of 67 presentations from 450 students and 109 teachers from each grade level, Pre-K through the Twelve Plus Program, that spanned all content areas. Attleboro High School clubs were also represented at the event including, Medical Club, K-Pop Club and Future Focus.

Attendees observed several student projects and classroom assignments on display. One group of second-grade students presented country research projects with video commercial creations to promote tourism.

An eighth-grade class shared their Civics Action Projects where they explored an issue within their community and engaged in the civic process to foster positive change for that issue. The project topics ranged from addressing clothing insecurity to raising mental health awareness.

Some students at the high school level presented attendees with “This I Believe” essays, where students created original narratives that highlighted and clarified a deeply-held belief. They distributed their essays in written format as well as in audio recordings at the event. Others presented their art portfolios with work they’ve completed throughout the school year.

One kindergarten class presented their projects on “BeeBots”, where students coded a bee robot to find a particular letter, sound, or sight word to practice their early literacy skills. A third-grade class displayed their fraction projects using dinner foods to demonstrate addition and subtraction. Another third-grade class presented their research on historical features with cardboard cutouts. A fifth-grade class shared their travel agent math projects. They showed their math skills by calculating travel costs to different destinations.

In addition to the student presentations, 23 community resources and organizations that serve the City of Attleboro had tables at the event to share information about their services and programs. Local organizations represented at the event offered services that support basic needs, including food accessibility, mental health, enrichment and education, childcare and parental support. Representatives from each organization were available to answer questions and interact with attendees.

During the event, there were also dance and musical performances from the K-Pop Club, middle school chorus students and the high school marching band. Each performance allowed all who attended to see first-hand the learning opportunities students engage in every day to hone their skills as collaborators, communicators and innovators.

“Our second annual “A Night to Discover” event was truly remarkable,” said Superintendent Sawyer. “It showcased not only the hard work and dedication of our students throughout the year, but also provided a chance for our community to engage with important local organizations and resources. It’s heartening to see our APS community come together in such a meaningful way.”

APS would like to extend a special thanks to: the Attleboro High School Graphic and Design students for printing programs and t-shirts for teachers and the planning committee; DoubleACS and the TV, radio & broadcasting students for documenting the evening; the interpreters who represented four languages; the National Honor Society volunteers and the Student Activities Office; Sodexho and custodians for assisting in the setup and break down for the event; and the APS District Center of Instruction.

APS would also like to thank all students, teachers and staff who prepared for the evening to make it a success.
