CANTON — Town Administrator Charles Doody is pleased to announce the Town’s new group electricity buying program, Canton Electricity Choice.
Canton Electricity Choice is a municipal electricity aggregation program, which is a type of group electricity purchasing program for Canton residents and businesses. The program will launch in June.
Through Canton Electricity Choice, the Town will use the collective buying power of the community to provide affordable renewable electricity options that give electricity customers more choice and control over the electricity they buy. Canton joins nearly 170 other Massachusetts communities that have this type of electricity program.
Through the program, and as a result of a new supply contract with Constellation New Energy, Canton customers will get more of their electricity from renewable sources for a price that is estimated to be lower than Eversource’s current residential Basic Service price, though future savings compared with Eversource cannot be guaranteed.
The program has the following four options:
- Option 1 (“Default”): This is called the “Standard Green” or “Default” option. Customers will be automatically enrolled in this option unless they manually choose a different option.
- Under the Canton Standard Green “Default” option, customers will receive an additional 10% of their electricity from renewable sources for 13.434 ¢/kWh, a savings of more than 3 ¢/kWh or 22% compared to Eversource’s current residential price of 17.216 ¢/kWh, which is in effect through July 31, 2024.
- Option 2 (“Opt Up”): This is called the “Canton Plus Green” or “Opt Up” option.
- Under the Canton Plus Green “Opt Up” option, customers will receive electricity that is 100% from renewable sources for 14.555 ¢/kWh or a 16% savings compared to Eversource’s current residential price. This selection will require manual action by the customer.
- Option 3 (“Opt Down”): This is called the “Canton Basic” or “Opt Down” option.
- Under the Canton Basic “Opt Down” option, customers will receive electricity with the minimum renewable electricity content required by state law for 13.003 ¢/kWh or a 24% savings compared to Eversource’s current residential price. This selection will require manual action by the customer.
- Option 4 (“Opt Out”): This is called the “Eversource Basic” or “Opt Out” option for customers who choose to stay with Eversource.
- Customers seeking to remain on Eversource’s Basic Service may also choose to “Opt Out” of the program before being automatically enrolled, or they can try the program and opt-out at any time with no penalty or fee. This selection will require manual action by the customer.
Most Canton electricity customers will be eligible for automatic enrollment at the Canton Standard Green price beginning in June. Customers with a private electricity supply contract are not eligible for automatic enrollment but can request enrollment here.
Customers who wish to choose Options 2, 3 or 4 described above will have to take manual action. They can do so by visiting the Canton Electricity Choice website, calling customer support at 1-844-202-6101, or completing the “Opt-Out Reply Card” received by mail after April 2.
Canton Electricity Choice participants will see a change in their electricity supplier and in the price that Eversource uses to calculate the supply portion of their electric bill. However, Eversource remains Canton’s electric utility and will continue to deliver electricity in Canton, address power outages and send electric bills.
“Coming Soon” postcards were mailed to Canton properties this week. Information packets, including the “Opt-Out Notice” and “Opt-Out Reply Card” will be mailed on April 2. Both of these mailings will bear the Town of Canton seal and the name and address of Constellation New Energy, the program’s electricity supplier.
Community members are also invited to attend two public information sessions about the program:
- Friday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at the Canton Senior Center, 500 Pleasant St.
- Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m. in the Canton Public Library’s Community Room, 786 Washington St.
For additional information on the program or for assistance determining which option is best for you, please visit the Canton Electricity Choice webpage or call 1-844-202-6101.
