UXBRIDGE — Principal Michael Rubin and DECA Advisor Corey Guerra are pleased to recognize senior student Ellie Lewis who recently competed at the DECA State Career Development Conference (SCDC) and is the school’s first international conference qualifier.
From March 7-9, Lewis attended SCDC at the Marriott Copley and Hynes Convention Center in Boston. She joined over 3,500 students at this year’s conference who participated in over 50 competitive categories related to marketing, hospitality, finance and entrepreneurship.
Lewis competed in the Business Growth Plan event, which involves idea generation and strategy development needed to grow an existing business. Participants in the Business Growth Plan category analyze current business operations and identify opportunities for growth and expansion. Lewis submitted a paper outlining her business, El’s Creations, and wrote about how she plans to expand her business while overcoming the risks that may arise. She also presented the plan to a judge as part of the competitive event.
Lewis placed in the top five of the Business Growth Plan category and qualified to compete at the International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Anaheim, California in April. She is Uxbridge’s first ICDC qualifier. She will join over 23,000 students from across the world and represent Massachusetts DECA in her event.
In addition to Lewis, senior students Syrianna Douangsavanh and Brynn Doherty will attend ICDC and compete in the School-Based Enterprise (SBE) event. Sophomores Erin Roche and Sophia Freire will attend DECA’s Thrive Academy in Anaheim.
A central part of the DECA program is the opportunity to attend leadership and competitive conferences around the state and country throughout the year. These conferences give members a realistic insight into the industry and an opportunity to engage with professionals and demonstrate their knowledge. Competitions begin at the District level where students compete against peers from other high schools in the area. Competitors can advance to the State level and then to the International level.
