UXBRIDGE —  Principal Michael Rubin is pleased to share that the Uxbridge High School Student Council was honored at the Massachusetts Association of Student Councils’ (MASC) Annual Spring Conference last week.

The conference was held March 6-8 at the Cape Cod Resort & Conference Center in Hyannis. During the conference, the Uxbridge High School Student Council was named a Gold Council of Excellence.

According to the MASC website, the Gold Council of Excellence is one of the highest honors a student council can receive from the organization. The award is presented to student council programs that are deemed to be the most outstanding in the state association. The recognition is based on a competitive scoring rubric voted on by a committee of judges.

The Uxbridge High School Student Council focuses on community and school service. In an effort to give back to the community, the Council regularly supports its local food pantry, The People First Food Pantry. Student council members collect food for food drives, collect toys for the organization’s Adopt a Family Program, assemble food baskets for Thanksgiving and more.

In addition, Uxbridge High School Student Council members volunteer at the local senior center, support the school’s PTO with event planning and projects, participate in the town’s annual clean up, and offer babysitting services to the school’s PTO members.

Each year, Uxbridge High School Student Council members also participate in the Special Olympics Massachusetts Annual Polar Plunge, which takes place during the first week of March. This year, student council members raised $1,200 to be donated to the Special Olympics of Massachusetts.

Student Council members are also responsible for sponsoring school spirit events including spirit week, teacher and administration recognition days, pep rallies, dodgeball tournaments and field day.

“On behalf of the entire district, I would like to congratulate the Uxbridge High School Student Council for this achievement,” said Superintendent Michael Baldassarre. “Student Councils are amazing in that they provide early opportunities for our kids to understand how great it feels to serve others. hese are the real learning opportunities.  We are so proud of our student leaders here in Uxbridge.”

Uxbridge High School Student Council members James Bernard, Ella Pezzullo and Maddie Fairweather were awarded the MASC Commonwealth Award during the MASC Annual Spring Conference. This award is presented to students who exemplify traits of student leaders, based on leadership, citizenship and foundation.

“This is an amazing group of young adults who want to make positive changes in our school, community, and our world,” said Student Council Advisor Sheila Bernard. “They actively promote inclusion, school spirit, and leadership by example. I am proud to be their advisor.”

Student Council Advisor Bernard was also recognized by MASC with a bronze award for serving 15 years as an advisor.
