NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg and Principal Stephen Paterson share that four Kearsarge Regional Middle School teams will compete in the state’s first student drone tournament this weekend.
The teams will be among 19 from New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Vermont to compete in New Hampshire’s First Aerial Drone Competition on Saturday. The tournament is the result of a partnership between Kearsarge Regional Middle School and host Great Brook Middle School in Antrim.
The tournament is supported by the Robotics Education & Competition (REC) Foundation, which assists educators through competition and workforce readiness programs to increase student engagement in science, technology, engineering, math, and computer science.
The competition was planned as a scrimmage but was promoted to tournament status with winners qualifying for regional competition.
Maureen McGinty and Laurie Prewandowski serve as team advisors.
The tournament allows students to engage in hands-on, student-centered learning. Teams learn about drones, flight principles, programming, documentation, and communication skills while expanding their understanding and building interest for related career opportunities.
Top-performing teams will qualify for the Northeast Regional Championship at Fairmont State University in West Virginia on May 17-18.
