BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and Pre-K through Grade 5 Curriculum Director Lisa Dix are pleased to announce that two schools will kick off Read Across America Week with author Michelle Cusolito.
On Monday, March 4, special guest and author Michelle Cusolito will visit Bournedale Elementary School and Bourne Intermediate School to read to students K-5 for Read Across America Week. She will present both of her books, “Flying Deep” and “Diving Deep.”
“Diving Deep” and “Flying Deep” are both STEM picture books that examine snorkeling, freediving, scuba, and submarines, and discuss technologies scientists use to explore the ocean.
During Read Across America Week, both elementary schools will participate in Spirit Week reading activities for each day. Students will join in a school-wide Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), draw a picture of their favorite book or character, write a kind note for someone to read and dress up as their favorite book character.
Read Across America is coordinated by Bourne Public Schools’ Literacy Team. The team has created a week of activities around literacy to celebrate the National Read Across America Program.
The National Education Association’s “Read Across America” program is an annual reading motivation and awareness campaign that calls for children to celebrate reading. Schools, libraries and communities across the country recognize a weeklong celebration centered around March 2 (corresponding with Dr. Seuss’ birthday), with other programming throughout the year.
Both elementary schools will participate in Read Across America through March 8.
