MANSFIELD – Superintendent Teresa Murphy and Principal David McGovern are pleased to share that the new Qualters Middle School Gaming Club has been a tremendous success after being started by School Resource Officer (SRO) Derek McCune.

SRO McCune officially launched the gaming club in January after presenting the idea to police command staff and school administration in November.

SRO McCune’s inspiration for starting the club came following a work training where he learned about similar clubs in surrounding school districts.

“The Game Club is yet another example of the impactful opportunities that our School Resource Officers develop for Mansfield students,” said Superintendent Murphy.  “I would like to thank SRO McCune for all of his efforts to create this club and for providing our students with a positive and safe atmosphere to interact with friends.”

SRO McCune secured funding through the law enforcement trust account to purchase gaming materials including two Nintendo Switches, controllers and a variety of games.

The Qualters Middle School Gaming Club meets twice a week in the school’s health classrooms after school on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Students in grades six through eight gather to play games and enjoy a lively atmosphere. Games played in the club include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros., Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and more.

Mansfield Police officers often stop by the gaming club to interact with students and share in the fun.

“I would like to thank my department and the Mansfield school leadership for the outpouring of support that I received while initiating this project,” said SRO McCune.”The success of this program has been a true group effort and we look forward to welcoming new students for years to come.”

Students interested in joining the Qualters Middle School Gaming Club can secure their spot using the daily sign-up sheet located outside of SRO McCune’s office.  Gamers of all experience levels are welcome to participate.
