WAREHAM — Superintendent Matt D’Andrea and Principal Bethany Chandler are pleased to share that Wareham Elementary School students recently participated in the Wareham Area Committee for the Homeless (WACH) Baby Point Program and donated boxes of essential baby items to their community.
On Tuesday, Feb. 20, more than a dozen boxes of essential baby items were delivered to WACH to be distributed to local families in need.
WACH operates the Baby Point program, a year-round non-profit 501 (c) (3) sponsored program that seeks to help low-income parents care for babies in a hygienic and healthful way.
Under the direction of Physical Education Teacher Deanna Semple, Wareham Elementary School began a partnership with local food pantries in 2010 in order to contribute to families in need ahead of the holiday season.
Through this work, Semple noted the need for baby product donations and asked about WACH’s Baby Point Program.
Beginning in February, Wareham Elementary School students were tasked with bringing in a variety of essential baby items including diapers, clothing, formula, children’s hygiene items and more. Items were collected in the school’s main lobby.
Semple, assisted by Secretary Jennifer LeFrancois, loaded donated goods and delivered the boxes to WACH on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
As a reward for their efforts, students were granted Hat Day, and celebrated by forgoing dress code and wearing a hat of their choosing to school.
This is the second consecutive year that Wareham Elementary School has participated in WACH’s Baby Point Program.
“I would like to recognize Deanna Semple for leading this initiative each year,” said Superintendent D’Andrea. “We are grateful to take part in such a meaningful experience. Through this work, our students have the opportunity to reflect on their day-to-day lives and give back to those that are less fortunate.”
