NEWBURYPORT — The Newburyport Public Library is pleased to announce the hiring of Dana Echelberger as the new Senior Librarian for Archive Services. Dana is currently the Library’s Senior Librarian for Reference and Information Services, a position she has served in since August 2022.
“We are very excited to welcome Dana to this position,” said Head Librarian Kevin Bourque. “Dana comes to the position with the requisite education and experience needed to successfully lead the Newburyport Public Library Archival Center. We think she’ll do great things for the Center.”
Echelberger received her Master of Science, Library Science with a concentration in Archival Management, from Simmons University in Boston in 2017. She began her tenure at the Newburyport Public Library in 2016 as the Assistant Archivist.
Echelberger succeeds Sharon Spieldenner, who retired from the Library in December.
“We are grateful to Sharon for all her work for the Archives and expanding its role in the community and beyond,” Bourque said. “The Archival Center has great importance to residents and researchers from far and wide, and Sharon’s work is a huge reason why. We look forward to building on this foundation in the future.”
Echelberger has successfully led both Archive Services and Reference and Information Services since October. She will officially assume responsibilities as Senior Librarian for Archive Services on Friday, March 1.
“It’s always great to have a deep bench when working in municipal government and we are so lucky to have Dana on staff to take the reins of this important role,” Mayor Sean Reardon said. “The Newburyport Public Library is one of the treasures of our great city, steeped in history and we are so fortunate to have such a skilled staff in place.”
