BOSTON — The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division hosted special guests on Monday as Boston Bruins centers Trent Frederic and Morgan Geekie led a street hockey clinic at the non-profit’s Boston Kroc Center.
Frederic, a center with 14 goals and 15 assists so far this year, and Geekie, a center with 9 goals and 15 assists so far this year, gave youth tips and encouragement during the clinic held on the Boston Kroc’s NCAA-size basketball court. Both players and Bruins staff helped teach participants hockey fundamentals and then led a street hockey game.
Youth participants hailed from The Salvation Army’s youth programs in the South End and from the Kroc.
The Salvation Army’s South End Enrichment Program is a licensed after-school program by The Salvation Army’s Boston South End Corps under the Department of Early Education and Care. The Kroc Kids FEAST program is an out-of-school time program that aims to provide a relaxed, safe Christian environment where children develop appropriate social behavior, discover new skills, pursue interests, utilize talents, make new friends, and have lots of fun. Both youth education programs aim to prepare and position students for higher education.
Youth between the ages of 6-12 have the opportunity to receive tutoring and mentoring, spiritual development, social and emotional skill development, fitness fun and enrichment activities.
“We are grateful to the Boston Bruins for sending great ambassadors to host this street hockey clinic at The Salvation Army. It was a pleasure to see youth enjoying an afternoon of fun and fitness,” said Major Elijah Kahn, recently appointed General Secretary of The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division, who stopped by to observe the action. “The Bruins are a wonderful, longstanding community partner who are committed to providing our youth with enriching and team-building opportunities.”
