NEW LONDON — When fourth grade student Abigail Farnsworth travels to school she rides the bus alongside her friends every day, often thinking about becoming a scientist when she is older.
One morning something different happened.
On Dec. 4, while riding the bus, Abigail noticed that one of her friends was not feeling well and was becoming sick. When other students started to draw attention to what was going on, Abigail stepped up and comforted her friend.
As the bus pulled into the Kearsarge Elementary School drop-off area, Abigail instructed the other students to give her friend some space and get off the bus. Abigail sat with her friend and remained calm as she helped her friend off the bus and walked her to the nurse’s office.
The bus driver, John Demars, was in awe of Abigail’s kindness and went inside the school to share what he had witnessed during his morning route to school.
Principal Kelly Collins and School Counselor Taylor Fluery were so moved by Abigail’s actions of support and friendship that Kearsarge Student of the Month program was expanded to the elementary school level.
“This act of kindness is truly what our school community is about,” said Principal Collins. “I am extremely proud of Abigail for her selfless act of kindness and compassion towards her friend. We are hoping to move forward with this new opportunity for students and staff, where we can celebrate and showcase Cougar Kindness all month long, in hopes to inspire others to do great things.”
Students of the Month are selected by Kearsarge faculty from a pool of nominated students. This honor is in recognition of the student’s positive conduct and character, both on and off campus, and is an acknowledgment of an individual’s positive moral, character, and their contributions to the school community.
When asked why she decided to help, Abigail stated that she had felt embarrassed before and didn’t want her friend to feel like that. She added that she was surprised to be honored as she had never won an award like this before.
Abigail is now considering becoming a nurse when she is older.
“Abigail is a wonderful kid and truly one of a kind! She works hard on everything she does and she is always willing to help anyone in her class, even helping the first graders get their lunch before she gets her own,” said Grade 4 Teacher Murphy Rainville. “We are very proud of her for achieving Student of the Month. It doesn’t surprise me one bit as we see these kinds of things from her each and every day!”
Abigail was selected as the school’s first Student of the Month forDecember.
“Student of the Month is a way for students to be recognized for going above and beyond both in and outside of school,” said Superintendent Feneberg. “Abigail has displayed a level of maturity and helpfulness that students in all grade levels can look up to.”
