NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department arrested and charged a man with possession of drugs.

SHELBY HILSON, AGE 41, of NEWPORT was arrested and charged with the following

  • Possession and Control of Regulated Drugs (Felony)
  • Violation of Conditions of Release (Three Counts)

On Wednesday, Jan. 17 at approximately 11:10 p.m., Newport Police observed an unfamiliar vehicle a red Ford F-150, driving around the back of the municipal building parking lot located at 222 Main St.

Officers approached the vehicle, which had moved from the back lot to the lower-level municipal lot. They observed the passenger, later identified as HILSON, to be holding a small plastic bag that appeared to be filled with a white powdery substance.

Newport Police spoke with the driver and HILSON. Officers then conducted a search of HILSON and of the vehicle and found two bags of white powdery substance, determined to be cocaine and crack totaling four grams. Officers also located drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

HILSON was arrested without incident. After booking, officers determined that HILSON had violated a court-ordered stemming from a separate incident.

HILSON is scheduled to be arraigned in Orleans District Court later today.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
