NEWBURYPORT — Mayor Sean R. Reardon wishes to update the community on its response and recovery efforts during last weekend’s storm, and encourage anyone affected to contact the City.

The weekend storm brought tides of about 12.5 feet — three feet higher than expected. with Plum Island to the Chain Bridge particularly affected. Areas of the City suffered extensive damage. Mayor Reardon and Fire Chief Stephen H. Bradbury III are coordinating with the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) on local recovery efforts.

Residents who suffered property damage as a result of the storm are asked to email mayor@cityofnewburyport.com with contact information, and a brief description of the damage. MEMA will contact affected residents for more information, and consider whether state assistance will be available.

On Saturday, Newburyport first responders and their mutual aid partners handles a number of weather-related emergencies, including two electrical fires, a cardiac arrest, and stranded motorists, as well as checking on senior residents and ensuring residents had basic needs.

Mayor Reardon will meet with the Emergency Management Team — Chief Bradbury, City Marshall Mark Murray, Department of Public Services Director Wayne Amaral, and Harbormaster Paul Hogg — in the coming weeks to discuss public communications and how to best convey information before, during, and after weather-related events as quickly as possible.
