UXBRIDGE — Uxbridge High School hosted its first internship fair in the UHS gymnasium on Wednesday, January 10, the culminating activity for the students involved in the career exploration and Innovation Pathway programs.

Organized and coordinated by Dean of Students and Internship Coordinator David Moura, the event provided approximately 40 Uxbridge High School seniors gathered to present their internship projects to fellow students, industry partners and community members.

The event also allowed students in the grade 8 exploration program to engage in a scavenger hunt, allowing the school’s youngest learners to engage with seniors, ask questions, and gain perspective on their future endeavors and interests.

As part of the internship program, students were allotted internship blocks during school hours and were given the opportunity to work with industry professionals and gain real-world hands-on experience in a field of their choosing.

During the event, students presented hand-made poster boards and spoke to attendees about the various responsibilities they were given as interns and how these internships impacted them.

“At the core of reimagining the school experience is the opportunity for our students to make learning real and authentic,” said UHS Principal Dr. Michael Rubin. “I’m beyond proud of Mr. Moura’s efforts to inspire and connect these students to industry, for our industry and community partners for supporting those students, and, most importantly, the hard work and perspective of our students in sharing their experiences.”

Senior Student Kate Cahill spoke about her experience working as a nursing intern at Taft Early Learning Center.

“Seeing the impact that I had on students’ lives every day was really rewarding,” said Cahill.

Industry partners in attendance included State Representative Michael Soter, Uxbridge Selectman John Wise, PawSteps Veterinary Center representative Jillian Terasconi, UHS Science Department Leader Tracy Larkin, CPA Mike Okenquist of Paresky Flitt and Company, State Senator Ryan Fattman, Eric Taylor of Blackstone Valley Physical Therapy, Adjustment Counselor and Coordinator of Mending Spartan Minds Lori Tobin, Social teachers Frank Barbuto and Brian Grady, Katie Esposito and Karen Spencer of Girls on the Run, Elaine Wiley of Milford Hospital, UCTV Director Barry Giles, Facilities Manager Phil Vondras, and Family Consumer Science teacher Bethany Dzivasen.

Uxbridge High School Senior Liam Rigney spoke about his internship experience working for the Office of State Representative Michael Soter.

“It was a pleasure to work alongside Representative Soter throughout my internship,” said Rigney. “I most enjoyed going to events and seeing the different groups that he is a part of and contributes to.”

PawSteps Veterinary Center representative Jillian Terasconi attended the event and spoke about the positive impact of internship programs and how they allow students to explore different specializations within the field of veterinary medicine.

Students participated in internships with several area businesses and organizations including the Office of State Representative Michael Soter, Taft Early Learning Center, AdviniaCare Northbridge, Turf Technologies Inc., Avenue Fifty Salon & Spa, Uxbridge High School, Access TCA Inc., Uxbridge Fire Department, Douglas Police Department, Blackstone Valley Physical Therapy Services, Inc., Precious Ones Childcare Center & Preschool, PawSteps Veterinary Center, Milford Regional Medical Center, ERA Key Realty Services, Whitinsville Christian School, Girls on the Run, Uxbridge Community Television, Paresky Flitt & Co., Carhartt and more.
