MARION — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson is pleased to announce that Sippican Elementary School students took part in their 2024 science fair this week.
The fair was held on Wednesday, Jan. 10, in the Sippican Elementary’s multipurpose room. The science fair was coordinated by Enrichment teacher Chelsey Lawrence and featured projects from 31 students in grades K-6.
Students who participated in the fair had the opportunity to enter projects as individuals or groups. The projects could either use the scientific method to conduct an experiment
or create an invention to solve a problem. Some of the student projects included an invention to cool a pillow, a Lego earthquake simulator, a test of which toilet paper is most absorbent, and how to create a futuristic bio-fabric.
The projects incorporated a visual display, such as a tri-fold board or slideshow presentation, paired with a verbal explanation to a judge. The judges included teachers from all schools in the districts’ Mentoring Past the First Year Program.
“The science fair is a testament to our students’ forward thinking, allowing them to apply their classroom knowledge and develop invaluable skills for future academic and real-world challenges,” said Assistant Principal Pete Crisafulli.
This year, the science fair also included a student showcase area that displayed projects students completed through Enrichment Flex Group. All of the projects were made using 3D printers and Tinkercad. Sixth-grade students created food trucks and menus, fifth-graders worked on fantasy theme park designs and fourth-graders invented animals.
“Witnessing our youngest learners engage in the science fair is exciting,” said Early Childhood Coordinator Doreen Lopes. “It sparks their natural wonder, encouraging a love for exploration that will shape their early academic experiences and beyond.”
Mad Science of Fall River was also in attendance with Mad Scientist Cosmic Carol hosting a Make-and-Take dry ice experiment for students to take home.
“Thank you to all who chose to participate in this year’s science fair! I love to see the creative projects that students come up with,” Lawrence said. “The science fair is a great way to enrich students’ learning as well as their interests outside of school!”
