Two Medway High School Seniors Receive Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership

MEDWAY — Superintendent Armand Pires and Principal John Murray are pleased to announce that two Medway High School seniors were awarded the New England School Development Council (NESDEC) Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership in Learning. 

The annual award was given to Elizabeth Kenney and Reuben Simon in recognition of their academic achievements and accomplishments in their high school years. Both students met the award criteria of pursuing a high level of academic achievement, serving as a positive role model for the student body and exemplifying admirable character and accomplishment. 

Kenney and Simon were recognized at the Medway School Committee meeting on Thursday, Nov. 2. 

“Elizabeth and Reuben show outstanding work ethic and an aptitude for learning and growth. They have dedicated themselves to progress in their academic studies, as well as the athletics and organizations they are involved in,” Principal Murray said. “I do not doubt that they will keep striving for excellence and we are proud to recognize them for their achievements.”

Elizabeth Kenney 

Elizabeth is described as a standout student who has consistently demonstrated her qualities as a leader, learner, and valuable member of the school and local community, and who displays remarkable maturity, kindness and intelligence.

While at Medway High School, she has challenged herself academically by taking Honors and AP courses. At the end of her senior year, she will have taken 10 Honors classes and nine Advanced Placement courses. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was the recipient of the Boston College Book Award. 

She is the president of her class, a Peer Counselor and a member of Best Buddies. She is a varsity student-athlete on the field hockey, ski and lacrosse teams, and this year serves as a captain on the field hockey and ski teams. She was also selected as the student representative from MHS at the MIAA Leadership Conference. 

Reuben Simon 

Reuben is described as an adaptable and persevering student who shows a determination to succeed and a willingness to help others. He is a Peer Counselor at MHS and has taken multiple Advanced Placement courses.

As a student-athlete in basketball, Reuben showed resilience following an injury his sophomore year. He worked tirelessly to recover and proved that he could overcome obstacles with determination and a positive mindset. He is also a youth basketball coach and shows exceptional leadership skills and a deep understanding of the importance of mentorship.
