CANTON — Town Administrator Charles Doody and Town Planner TJ Torres are pleased to announce that the Town of Canton was awarded $40,000 in grant funding for the completion of the Town’s ADA (The Americans with Disabilities Act) assessment and transition plan for Town facilities.
The Town of Canton received the funding as part of a Community Compact Grant, which is a state grant program administered by the State Division of Local Services.
The funding will be used to procure a consultant that specializes in ADA assessments and transition planning.
The completed transition plan will include a comprehensive list of specific items in municipal facilities that the Town will address to ensure full ADA accessibility. The plan is a continuation of the 2016 ADA Self-Evaluation by KMA Architecture and Accessibility, which was a cursory review of Town policies, procedures and department surveys to provide initial recommendations on improving public accessibility.
Members of the public can make ADA accommodation requests relating to the use of Town facilities or participation in Town programming through the Canton Select Board Office.
The Town anticipates that the final plan will be complete within a year.
“Ensuring equitable access to Canton’s facilities for our staff, residents and visitors is paramount,” said Town Administrator Doody. “I would like to thank the Commonwealth for awarding us this grant, which will allow us to fund our ADA assessment and transition plan and highlight any and all remaining deficiencies so that they can be addressed.”
The Community Compact Grant was created in the early days of the Baker-Polito Administration and has now been continued by Gov. Maura Healey. It is open to all 351 municipalities and provides direct assistance in achieving “best practices” via grants for consulting services.
