WOBURN – Woburn Memorial High School announces that senior Alexa Dhaliwal was awarded the October Italian-American Heritage (OIHM) Founders Scholarship by the Italian Heritage Month Committee.
To kick off Italian-American Heritage Month, celebrated in October, the Italian-American Heritage Committee held a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House in Boston on Monday, Oct. 2.
WMHS senior and AP Italian student Alexa Dhaliwal was awarded the OIHM Founders Scholarship by the Committee. The award was presented by CASIT, an organization that promotes the study of the Italian language in schools in the jurisdiction of the Italian Consulate in Boston.
Dhaliwal received the award in the presence of Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, Mayor of Boston Michelle Wu, Speaker of the State House Ronald J. Mariano, and other dignitaries and honorees.
Dhaliwal was accompanied to the ceremony by Italian Teacher Cinzia Gilbertie.
National Italian-American Heritage month was first recognized by the United States Congress in October 1989 as a tribute to all Italian-Americans’ contributions to the nation, and to highlight the cultural impact of the Italian-American community.
