CANTON — Superintendent Jill Rossetti and the Blue Hills Regional Technical School would like to invite community members to attend an upcoming tour of a Westwood home addition that was completed by Construction Program students last school year.
WHEN:
Friday, Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to noon
WHERE:
Please contact Administrative Assistant to Vocational Director Madelyn Kewer at 781-828-5800 ext. 2200 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to RSVP and receive the address.
WHAT:
Community members are invited to tour homeowners Michael Petta and Cheryl Bornstein’s new addition that was built last school year by Blue Hills Regional Construction Program students. Petta and Bornstein pursued the home addition with the goal of maximizing present space for their six children, nearly all young adults, with an equal focus on accommodating their senior lives in the years ahead.
During the open house, Petta and Bornstein will be joined by Blue Hills administrators, Construction Technology teachers and Construction Technology sophomores and seniors who will discuss the project while they provide tours.
Work on the home began in September 2022 by Blue Hills Construction Program juniors and seniors. At the home, students completed the framing of a 1,800-square-foot addition and a 700-square-foot covered porch under the guidance of Blue Hills instructors, Dave Blakeley and Ron Eby, who have their construction supervisor’s license and Chapter 74 carpentry license. To keep with the theme of a craftsman-style home, the addition has several low-pitched roofs, extended eaves, covered porches and heavy tapered columns, among other design features.
For Blue Hills students, this project provides an environment that mimics what a job site will look like in their professional futures.
The project included, but was not limited to, the following components of the Construction Technology Curriculum: Job Site and Tool Safety, Floor Framing, Wall Framing, Roof Framing, Roofing, Exterior Trim, Siding, Door and Window Installation and Employability. While at the home, students incorporate these components into the work they are completing.
