
NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department charged a man with theft, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct on Tuesday.
THOMAS CLONEY, AGE 39, OF NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with:
- Retail Theft
- Resisting Arrest (Two Counts)
- Disorderly Conduct
On Tuesday, Sept. 26, at about 10:15 a.m., Newport Police were called to a Main Street business for a report of an individual who took items from the store without paying.
A review of the store’s video surveillance led to the identification of CLONEY as a suspect.
At about 11:30 a.m., officers located CLONEY in the area of Prouty Campground, but CLONEY fled on foot when approached. When he was located again a short time later, CLONEY pulled out a knife and held it by his side.
An officer drew his weapon and ordered CLONEY to drop the weapon. CLONEY did so and was taken into custody.
CLONEY is well known to Newport Police and has faced retail theft charges before.
CLONEY was arraigned Tuesdayin the Orleans District Court. He was released on personal recognizance, with the conditions he not return to the store nor possess dangerous weapons.
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
