Hopkinton Public Library Encourages Reading, Understanding and Community Through One Book/One Hopkinton

HOPKINTON — Community members in Hopkinton will have the opportunity to come together through reading and community conversations via the Hopkinton Public Library’s first One Book/One Hopkinton program.

Hopkinton is a fast-growing community and with that growth comes wonderful diversity! This fall, the Hopkinton Public Library invites and encourages everyone to come together by reading and discussing the same book: “Digging to America” by Anne Tyler.

The novel is about two families — the Yazdan and Donaldson families — who meet at the airport in Baltimore as they are picking up their adopted infant daughters from Korea. The families form a lifelong friendship and as they raise their daughters, both families grapple with questions of assimilation and cultural identity.

The book has many topics that will make for valuable community discussion. How does one assimilate into a new community while honoring and keeping their own cultural traditions? How do different cultures view their elderly? What is it like to try for years for a child and then to finally adopt one?

“Let’s come together as a community and celebrate our similarities and differences through the lens of the same book,” Director Hill said. “We encourage our patrons to participate in the initiative by checking out the book, participating in a book discussion or attending one of the many programs we have planned for the coming months.”

Hopkinton’s One Book/One Hopkinton program began on Sept. 15 and runs through Nov. 17. Thanks to funding from The Hopkinton Public Library Foundation, the library has 150 copies of “Digging to America” for community members to check out over the course of the three-month initiative. Those who read the book are also encouraged to celebrate with a pin from the Circulation Desk declaring “I’ve Read It!”

Community members are also encouraged to attend scheduled book discussions and other programs for all ages:
