LUDLOW — Town Administrator Marc Strange, Public Health Director Paulina Matusik and Fire Chief Ryan Pease report that the Town of Ludlow has been issued a water boil order due to yesterday’s water main break.
The water boil order was issued by Springfield Water and Sewer Commission due to a water main break that occurred yesterday afternoon which affected all Springfield Water and Sewer Commission customers in the Town of Ludlow.

The water main break resulted in temporary system pressure loss in parts of the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission distribution area, which includes parts of Ludlow.
Loss of pressure can result in water suction through and into the distribution system, which may contain bacteria levels. While there is currently no presence of bacteria in test samples, a boil water order has been issued out of an abundance of caution.
The Town of Ludlow has issued a reverse 911 emergency notification alerting residents of the boil water order.
All water that will be used for cooking, drinking, brushing teeth, washing dishes or food preparation should be boiled for at least one minute prior to use, or bottled water should be used as an alternative. Any ice, beverages, formula, or uncooked foods that were prepared with water from the public water system on or after Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. should also be discarded.
Springfield Water and Sewer Commission and MassDEP are actively working to mitigate the issue.
The boil water order will remain in effect until further notice from the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission.
