CARVER — Chief Marc Duphily reports that the Carver Police Department is investigating after officers recovered a stolen U-Haul truck containing a stolen dirt bike in the rear.

At approximately 4:25 a.m. Thursday, Carver Police received a report about suspicious activity on Wenham Shores Drive.

A caller reported to police that two men were loading a four-wheeler all-terrain vehicle into the back of a U-Haul truck. The caller told police that there was a pair of bolt cutters on the seat of the ATV and thought it was suspicious.

As officers were responding, while driving down Center Street, a U-Haul truck passed them in the opposite lane of traffic headed toward Main Street. The officers turned their cruiser around and observed the driver of the U-Haul truck turn left into the Carver Public Library parking lot, located at 2 Meadowbrook way, next to the Carver Police Department.

The two men in the U-Haul truck fled out of the vehicle on foot and ran into the nearby wooded area in the rear of the parking lot. Officers gave chase and searched for the suspects but could not immediately locate them in the large, densely wooded area.

A perimeter was established and a member of the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department K-9 unit and members of the Plympton Police Department responded to assist in the search. After an extensive search, officers were unable to locate the suspects.

A dirt bike, that was stolen earlier in the morning from a home on Tremont Street, was recovered in the rear of the U-Haul truck.

The suspects left the ATV in the middle of the road on Wenham Shore Drive prior to coming in contact with police. It is believed that they may have been spooked by a passerby and left the scene.

The ATV was also recovered by Carver Police. Both the ATV and the dirt bike have since been returned to their respective owners.

A member of the Plymouth County Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) responded to take photographs and document evidence.

One of the suspects was believed to be wearing a white sweatshirt.

The U-Haul truck was recently reported stolen out of Taunton. The suspects are believed to be a part of a group who have been stealing moving trucks and using them to steal dirt bikes, ATVs and other items throughout the region in recent months.

Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity they may notice in their neighborhoods and to call 911 if they need police assistance. Chief Duphily also wants to remind residents to lock up their dirt bikes and ATVs or keep them stored indoors in a garage or shed.

If anyone is able to identify the suspects or has information about this incident or similar incidents, they are asked to call the Carver Police Department at 508-866-2000.
