BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and Bourne Middle School Principal Christine Borning are pleased to announce that eighth-grader Shea Riley was recently awarded the Advanced Studies and Leadership Program (ASLP) Scholarship.
The ASLP Scholarship, awarded by the Cape Cod Collaborative and Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) is presented to the top male and female ASLP participants based upon exhibited leadership traits throughout the course of the ASLP program.
Riley was presented with the ASLP Scholarship during the 2023 ASLP graduation ceremony on Saturday, July 22. In addition to receiving this recognition, Riley was awarded four years of tuition at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
“On behalf of the entire district, I would like to congratulate Shea Riley on this outstanding achievement,” Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou said. “Shea is an exceptional student and proven leader and we look forward to seeing her excel in her future studies.”
As a student at BMS, Riley excels academically and is also involved in the school’s theater and music program, including chorus.
“Shea is a kind, enthusiastic student who always gives her best and is a valued member of the Bourne Public Schools community,” said Bourne Middle School Principal Borning. “We are so proud of her!”
The 2023 ASLP Summer Session was held July 9-22 at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy campus in Buzzards Bay. Including Riley, there were 12 BPS students who attended the camp.
Each year, high-achieving eighth and ninth-grade students from Cape Cod experience two weeks of exciting hands-on study using world-class technology, including MMA’s ship simulator and emergency management training center, and participate in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) classes and other social activities.
Throughout the program, students participate in four-day modules, 3.5 hours each day, of hands-on study, which includes demonstrations and interactive work with world-class technology and state-of-the-art science labs. Each student also selects one Humanities course (105 minutes per day) to be selected from a tentative list of courses.
