BELMONT — Town Administrator Patrice Garvin would like to recognize Belmont’s dedicated professional staff in a series of employee spotlights. There are many hard-working employees working for Belmont that often go unrecognized. The purpose of these articles will be to bring these incredible employee accomplishments to light.
Town Administrator Garvin would like to recognize Council on Aging Transportation Coordinator Martin Cloherty for his continued service to the Town of Belmont for almost a decade.
“I want to extend my appreciation to Martin Cloherty, who has been an asset to Belmont’s Council on Aging for almost 10 years,” said Town Administrator Garvin.
Cloherty, a Dorchester native, began working as a full-time driver for Belmont’s Council on Aging in 2014 before being appointed to the role of Transportation Coordinator in 2016. In this role, he oversees transportation services and supervises multiple drivers and dispatchers including full-time driver Joe Brown and part-time drivers Giuseppe D’Andrea and Steve Hodgdon.
Belmont’s Council on Aging is charged with advocating on behalf of older adults in Belmont and collaborating with other town departments and committees, including transportation services, as well as community service providers to enhance the quality of life for seniors.
Cloherty supplies transportation services to Belmont seniors, aged 60 and above. The first ride available to seniors begins at 8:30 a.m. with the last ride ending after 3:30 p.m. During this time, seniors are able to travel to various Belmont destinations of their choice for shopping and/or medical needs by reservation.
Just last month, Belmont’s Council on Aging Transportation program provided over 730 rides to Belmont senior residents.
Most recently, Belmont’s Council on Aging Transportation program has partnered with Belmont Taxi to provide medical rides to patients seeking care outside of Belmont.
In November 2022, the transportation program was awarded $10,000 in grant funding through the Mass Development Taxi, Livery and Hackney Transportation Partnership Grant Program, which was used to cover the cost of the medical taxi ride for seniors.
Cloherty is proud to have helped secure an additional vehicle, added to the center’s fleet. The extra vehicle allows for more rides and accommodates the department’s ever-changing needs and requests.
“I feel like I am doing good at the end of each day and making a difference in the lives of our senior residents,” said Cloherty.
Cloherty holds a certificate in senior transportation from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
During his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife Katelyn and his two dogs, Leo and Lulu.
Cloherty would like to thank the team of dedicated staff and volunteers who make his work possible.
