MARION — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson and Principal Marla Sirois announce that there will be no school on Thursday, May 25 for Sippican Elementary students as cleanup efforts continue after a sprinkler malfunction resulted in extensive water damage to classrooms on the first and second floors Tuesday night.

School administration, facilities staff, and outside vendor partners have been working diligently since Tuesday night and have made significant progress in drying out and cleaning the impacted areas. Work to dry out the remaining impacted spaces continues at this time.

The building’s sprinkler system is operational once again. The fire alarms and notification system between the building and the Marion Fire Department also are functioning properly.

Further, the building’s elevator has been inspected and cleared for safe use.

School administration are working closely with the Marion Fire Department and the town’s Public Health Nurse to prepare the building and ensure it is safe for students’ return.

“Significant progress has been made on cleanup efforts, and I am grateful to our facilities staff and partners who are working diligently to help us prepare the building for our students to return,” Superintendent Nelson said. “We will continue to keep the community updated on our progress.”

The district will provide another update on Thursday. All updates will be communicated directly to families via email, through the news media and on the district website.
