ROCHESTER — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson and Principal Derek Medeiros are pleased to share that Rochester Memorial School students participated in the school’s first STEAMapalooza event last night.
STEAMapalooza was held on Thursday, May 18 at Rochester Memorial School and featured a variety of science, technology, engineering, art and math projects from students in K-6.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to the teachers, staff members and volunteers that contributed to the event,” said Superintendent Nelson. “I applaud each student who participated and showcased their hard work.”
STEAM education connects students to the real world through science, technology, engineering, art and math. Throughout the event, students and families experienced how these content areas come together to enhance students’ creativity, talent and innovative minds.
Students participated by entering a submission to the science fair portion of the event. Students had the opportunity to enter projects as individuals or groups. The projects could either use the scientific method to conduct an experiment or create an invention to solve a problem by following the engineering design process. Students presented their findings on tri-fold boards, Google Slides, science notebooks, and more.
In addition to the science fair, students had the opportunity to participate in The Art Show with Mrs.Beth Hemenway, Music Ensembles with Ms. Sue Audette and Mrs. Kaitlyn Laprise, Math Games with Mrs. Lisa Mazzuca and STEM Challenges with Mrs. SandraSollauer.
These activities allowed students and their families to participate in and explore the wide range of skill sets that STEAM curriculum offers.
Grade-level science demonstrations and presentations were also available for viewing throughout the evening.
To conclude the night celebrating STEAM, third grade families were invited to attend the Rochester Memorial School Recorder Concert, showcasing the skills third grade students learned throughout the course of their music class.
“The night was a great success and a true example of how STEAM education sparks a great deal of creativity and innovation among our students,” said Principal Medeiros. “I am proud of the work these students put into their STEAM projects and I look forward to continuing this event in the future.”
