Bourne High School Students Named South Coast Conference Academic All-Stars

BOURNE – Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou, Principal Amy Cetner together with National Honor Society Advisors Tristan Burke and Connor McAnaugh, are pleased to share that five Bourne High School seniors were recognized as South Coast Conference Academic All-Stars last week. 

BOURNE – Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou, Principal Amy Cetner together with National Honor Society Advisors Tristan Burke and Connor McAnaugh, are pleased to share that five Bourne High School seniors were recognized as South Coast Conference Academic All-Stars last week. 

On Thursday, April 27, Bourne High School seniors Ben Hopwood, Vanessa Fleck, Stefan Lumsden, Quinn Schwefler and Heather Lapworth were honored during the South Coast Conference Academic All-Star Luncheon, held at Independence Harbor in Assonet. 

Each year, South Coast Conference Schools recognize the top five students of the graduating class to be awarded the South Coast Conference Academic All-Star Award. Students awarded reflect each of the National Honor Society’s four pillars including service, character, scholarship and citizenship, and have also made a positive impact on their schools and community. 

The South Coast Conference includes Apponequet Regional High School, Bourne High School, Joseph Case High School, Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School, Fairhaven High School, Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School, Old Rochester Regional High School, Seekonk High School, Somerset Berkley Regional High School and Wareham High School. 

“These students have served as examples for others through their impressive academics, service to our community and involvement in co-curricular activities,” said Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou. “I am pleased to congratulate them for this well-deserved recognition.” 

Ben Hopwood

Hopwood was elected this year as a National Honor Society officer and currently serves as the National Honor Society treasurer. In addition to his academic success, Hopwood is a three-season athlete, playing varsity soccer, basketball and tennis. Hopwood has served as a captain of the soccer team and is a current member of the Bourne High School Student Council. In the fall, Hopwood plans to attend Flagler College or Florida Gulf Coast University to study criminal justice.

Vanessa Fleck

Fleck is an active member of the National Honor Society and of the Bourne High School Student Council. In addition to her academic achievements, she has been recognized for demonstrating leadership and serving as Bourne High School Junior Varsity Volleyball Captain. Fleck also represented Bourne High School at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Conference at Bentley University. In the Fall, she plans to attend Bryant University to study finance. 

Stefan Lumsden

Lumsden is a current member of the National Honor Society. In addition to his consistent academic success, he has also been elected as a captain for the Bourne High School Varsity Soccer Team and has been recognized with awards for most improved player, a coach’s award and numerous scholar-athlete awards. Lumsden is also an active member of the Key Club and serves as a coach for Bourne Youth Soccer. In the fall, he plans to study mechanical engineering at Clarkson University.

Quinn Schwefler

Schwefler is an active member of the National Honor Society who often seeks rigor and challenge in academics. Schwefler has previously served as a member of the varsity soccer and tennis teams. He has also played on the Junior Varsity Volleyball and Basketball Teams. In addition to sports and academics, Schwefler is a musician, playing piano, guitar and singing. In the fall, he plans to study at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. 

Heather Lapworth

Lapworth is a current member of the National Honor Society. In addition to her academics, she has played and excelled at field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse throughout her high school career. Lapworth has been recognized with both a sportsmanship award and a coaches award. In the fall, she plans to attend Salve Regina University to study psychology. 

“These students have all worked incredibly hard throughout their high school careers and it was extremely rewarding to see their hard work pay off,” said Advisor Tristan Burke.
