GORHAM – Principal Tina Binette is pleased to announce that Ed Fenn Elementary recently introduced skateboarding into the Physical Education curriculum.
Ed Fenn students in Grades 4 and 5 participated in a new physical education unit centered around skateboarding, titled “Get on Board”.
The two-week skateboarding unit was developed in collaboration with Portsmouth Elementary Physical Education Teacher Sean McGrimley and the non-profit First Push Syndicate, which visited Ed Fenn to kick off the program. The unit gives students the opportunity to explore a new outdoor activity, instill confidence, and help maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Students learned about the equipment and safety gear needed when riding a skateboard, proper skatepark etiquette, how to push the skateboard and apply proper foot orientation, how to safely turn, and move on the skateboard.
Students practiced how to control their balance while on the board, and how to travel over small natural obstacles, such as rocks, while riding.
Skateboards and safety gear including helmets, knee pads and elbow pads, were provided by First Push Syndicate through generous donations to the organization.
“As a physical educator I love how this program ties into my long-term curriculum goal, which is simply finding a lifelong fitness activity or hobby for every student. The positive feedback has been wonderful, and parents have already told me that their child wants to buy a skateboard,” said Physical Education Teacher Jesse Arsenault. “I also love how this unit’s curriculum covers four out of five National Physical Education Standards and draws students out of their comfort zones. It is very impressive how safety is the utmost priority, and how the progression of skill development is very effective!”
“Thank you to the First Push Syndicate for coming to Ed Fenn and working with our staff and students during this lesson,” said Principal Binette. “This is a great way for students to learn new skills and develop confidence. It was wonderful to see students excitement as they worked with peers to learn about skateboarding as a whole.”
