TAUNTON —  Superintendent Alexandre Magalhaes and Athletic Director Mark Lebeda are pleased to announce that Bristol-Plymouth Regional Technical School senior Jacob Schofield received the 2023 Boston Bruins-Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Sportsmanship Award.

On Tuesday, March 21, B-P goalie Schofield was honored during an on-ice ceremony during the second intermission of the Bruins’ home game at the TD Garden against the Ottawa Senators. Schofield was one of 31 school honorees at the game — all of whom were given free tickets to the event and invited for a pre-game dinner in one of the arena’s luxury boxes.

“On and off the ice, Jacob is one of the nicest and most polite students I’ve worked with,” Athletic Director Lebeda said. “Jacob deserves this award because of his hard work and sportsmanship, as well as the emotional strength he exhibited that helped him to overcome the passing of a teammate and friend earlier this year.”

Schofield began playing hockey early in his high school career. Schofield and the B-P hockey team went to the MIAA playoffs on March 1, where he made 49 saves in a double-overtime loss. Schofield also holds a 3.9 GPA in the B-P culinary arts program. He has plans to attend Colby Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire, to play hockey for their club team in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

Schofield used his guest ticket to the event for his younger brother. His parents were also in attendance at the game and award ceremony.

The MIAA and Boston Bruins partner to honor a student-athlete from boys and girls high school ice hockey leagues across the state for best exemplifying a commitment to sportsmanship throughout the season. The student-athletes are selected by representatives of their league according to the following award criteria:

  • An exemplary record of complying, both in spirit and letter, with all league and MIAA rules and regulations during the season
  •  A demonstrated record of respectfully accepting the rulings of game officials
  •  A record of conduct on and off the ice that brings honor to self, team, school, and community
  •  A commitment to teamwork by providing all members with recognition of their talents, an opportunity to contribute them to the team, and a spirit of camaraderie
  • A demonstrated respect for opponents before, during, and after games

“Our entire school is extremely proud of Jacob for this momentous achievement,” Superintendent Magalhaes said. “Jacob has really set a great example of sportsmanship and academic success that we hope all of our students look up to.”
