Belmont Police Department Awarded More than $19,000 as Part of Shared Streets and Spaces Program

BELMONT — Police Chief James MacIssac is pleased to announce that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has awarded the Belmont Police Department a Shared Streets and Spaces grant.

BELMONT — Police Chief James MacIssac is pleased to announce that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has awarded the Belmont Police Department a Shared Streets and Spaces grant.

The department was awarded $19,474 by MassDOT to implement two speed control devices around schools in town.

“We are thankful to MassDOT for allocating funds which will allow us to make safety improvements around the town of Belmont,” Chief MacIssac said. “We will use the funds to better ensure the safety of students and pedestrians in school zones, making sure motorists are mindful of their speed and enabling pedestrians to safely get to and from school.”

The Belmont Police Department will purchase the combination dynamic speed feedback and school zone speed limit signs, which will then be reimbursed through the grant. MassDOT will provide assembly and delivery of the signs at no cost.

The department will have established preexisting or new school zone codes prior to installation. They will also be responsible for the operations, maintenance, repair and disposal of the signs.

The signs are projected to be delivered in late spring or early summer and the department is hopeful they will be installed before the 2023-2024 school year begins.

The grant was awarded as a part of the Shared Streets and Spaces Program, created by the MassDOT to support projects that promote safe traveling in municipalities, public health, and the creation of repurposed space to allow for adequate social distancing while walking, biking, dining, shopping or traveling on public transportation.
