NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg and Principal Charles Langille are pleased to announce that Kearsarge Regional High School sophomore Lilah Batholomew placed second in the New Hampshire Poetry Out Loud State Championship.

The Poetry Out Loud State Championship took place on Friday, March 17 at the State House in Concord. Eight high school champions, who advanced from the state semifinals in February, competed.

Each contestant recited two poems they selected from Poetry Out Loud’s collection of renowned poems to be scored by a panel of judges on accuracy, voice and articulation, dramatic appropriateness, and other elements.

The four students who received the highest scores, including Bartholomew, advanced to the next round where they recited a third poem to determine the champion.

Bartholomew recited ‘A Certain Kind of Eden’ by Kay Ryan, ‘Jabberwocky’ by Lewis Carol, and ‘Mrs. Caldera’s House of Things’ by Gregory Djanikian as her three poems.

Bartholomew’s performance earned her second place overall, and she was named the alternate for the National Finals, which will be held in Washington, D.C. in May.

“Lilah’s performance at the Poetry Out Loud State Championship was nothing short of outstanding,” said Superintendent Feneberg. “She is a very talented young individual, and we are all looking forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the future. Congrats Lilah!”
