HAMPTON — Superintendent Lois Costa and Principal Kenneth Hawkins are pleased to announce that the Hampton School District has received a generous donation from the Chamber of Commerce to help fund Hampton Academy’s eighth-grade class trip.

This year’s class trip will be held in Washington, D.C., from May 9-12. Students will take guided tours of major monuments and visit the Capitol Building, the National Archives, the Smithsonian National Zoo, the Holocaust Museum and more.

The Chamber of Commerce and multiple state legislators donated over $2,100 to ensure all families in need of assistance can attend the trip.

The students’ visit to D.C. coincides with their curriculum, as they study the importance of historical events and how different branches of the government function. In the past students have also visited New York City and Boston for their eighth-grade trip.

Students raised money for the trip by selling candles, working in the concession stand at the school’s deliberative session and holding two raffles. Restaurants in the area also donated a portion of their sales on specific days to help raise funds for the school.

The trip is the first culminating class trip for eighth-grade students in over three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are so thankful to everyone who helped support our students, especially the Chamber of Commerce and our legislators,” Superintendent Costa said. “This trip is a way for students to get out of the classroom and have a learning experience that will stay with them as they move on to high school and beyond.”
