SOUTHBRIDGE — Receiver/Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey A. Villar and Principal Jeffrey House are pleased to announce that Southbridge Middle School is establishing a National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) chapter.

Students in Grades 6-8 with a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply to join the chapter. Students inducted into the chapter are expected to demonstrate the five pillars of the NJHS: scholarship, leadership, citizenship, character and service. The NJHS aims to help middle school students cultivate its five pillars and develop the knowledge and skills to become well-rounded student leaders in their school, community and beyond.

NJHS students will help plan and implement service projects to give back to the school and local community. Teachers and staff will also look to these students to be leaders during family events, step-up days and other building-wide events.

Additionally, students in the NJHS will have access to leadership conferences, scholarship awards, college and career readiness series and more.

“We are extremely pleased to be introducing a National Junior Honor Society chapter at our school,” Principal House said. “This chapter will serve as a way to recognize student accomplishments while also teaching them to be leaders in our school and the greater community. We strongly encourage all eligible students to apply to be a part of this great program.”

Ninety eligible students were given an application packet to complete by Feb. 17. Students chosen for the chapter will be recognized at an induction ceremony at a later date.

Once students reach high school, they will have the opportunity to apply to the National Honor Society should they meet the eligibility requirements.
