CANTON — The Canton School Committee and Superintendent Derek Folan are pleased to announce that the Canton Public Schools have reached a tentative agreement with the Canton Teachers Association Bargaining Units A and E.
“This has been a long and thorough process, but ultimately it is clear we all had the same goal: To put forward labor agreements that allow the Canton Public Schools to move forward and continue to provide the best possible education for the children of our community,” said School Committee Chair Kristian Darigan Merenda. “I want to thank the negotiation teams on both sides of the table for finding common ground and reaching consensus.”
The intense, 14-month negotiation process reached a successful conclusion after a third mediation meeting on Jan. 24. The School Leadership Team’s goal was to agree on contracts that center on educational excellence; rewards Canton’s educators for their dedication and hard work; and will be fiscally sustainable for the community, especially in the current national economic climate.
“We greatly appreciate the diligence and hard work put forward by our Canton Public Schools negotiating committee and the Canton Teachers Association leadership,” Superintendent Folan said. “Our common goal was to create a sustainable contract that benefits our students, teachers, Educational Support Professionals, and the Canton community. I am very pleased that we have come to terms on contracts Unit A and E.”
Next steps include presentation of the contracts by the CTA leadership to the bargaining units for ratification. After ratification by unit members, the School Committee will vote to formally ratify the contracts as well. The School Committee is hopeful this process can be completed on or before Feb. 16.
