NEW LONDON — The Kearsarge Regional School District invites the Kearsarge school community to three presentations of a conversation about youth and social media literacy.
The first session, “Social Media: A Predator’s Playground,” will be held Thursday, Feb. 9, from 6-7:30 p.m.
This presentation by police and representatives from the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task force is geared toward families, educators, and community leaders looking to gain a better understanding of the technology available to the teens and the ways predators can use the internet and social media to exploit them. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers after the presentation.
The second session, “Safe and Healthy Online: Building Protective Factors in Youth,” will be held Thursday, March 23, from 6-7:30 p.m.
This presentation and discussion with Crisis Center of Central New Hampshire is geared toward families and educators aiming to understand risks and to develop protective factors to help keep youth safe and healthy online. Topics will include healthy relationships, peer to peer cyberbullying, and fostering open communication. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers after the presentation.
The third session, “Digital Wellness for Families,” will be held Wednesday, April 19, from 6-7:30 p.m.
This hour-long interactive presentation by Media Power Youth is geared toward families, educators, and community members interested in helping youth build positive media habits. Presenters will discuss why young people are attracted to different media platforms, managing screen time, and how to engage in supportive conversations about media and technology. They provide tips on creating positive media moments that build the social-emotional and critical-thinking skills needed to navigate a media-rich world. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers after the presentation.
“Through these three courses, students, parents, and educators can educate themselves on the dangers of the media and how to use it in a smart and safe way,” Superintendent Winfried Feneberg. “We welcome anyone interested in internet safety precautions to join us for these presentations.”
All three presentations will be held at Kearsarge Regional Middle School, Library Media Center, 32 Gile Pond Road, North Sutton. The Media Center may be accessed through the gymnasium in the rear of the building. Light refreshments will be provided. Participants also may attend via Zoom.
