GROVELAND — Town Administrator Rebecca Oldham is pleased to announce that a mural will be painted on the ground of Main Street this weekend as part of the Shared Streets project.
The Shared Streets project included the introduction of a delineated and protected walking area on the southwestern portion of Main Street meant to increase pedestrian access to the area. This narrowed the wide roadway, and created a buffer between pedestrians and on-street parking.
As a part of the project, the town commissioned Alexander Golob, a public artist and president of Golob Art, to paint a mural on Main Street.
The 128 by 10-foot mural will be painted by Golob, members of his staff, and local Pentucket High School students. Artists will prime the mural on June 10, but the majority of painting will occur on June 11-12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“The Shared Streets project has made the Town of Groveland a better and safer place to live work and play. This mural is a key part of the project and will increase the visual appeal of this part of town, and make it a welcoming environment through fun colors and designs,” Town Administrator Oldham said. “We are so excited for this collaborative project to come to fruition.”
The mural, titled “Hop, Scotch, Splash,” will be painted in a stained glass-like fashion. It will feature a deep blue stream meant to mirror the Merrimack River throughout the various colors and stages of the four seasons. Rocks will be painted along the river to imitate a hopscotch pattern, so that children and fun-loving adults can hop from stone to stone.
“This mural will be a place for community members to play and have fun, and celebrate Groveland’s rich natural environment,” Golob said. “I am excited to see the hopscotchers, or splashers, pass through the colors of the seasons, including warm fall reds, cool winter blues, bright spring greens, lush summer yellows, and more.”
In addition to the mural, Golob will install two sidewalk stamps at a later date. One stamp will feature a lush gathering of rhododendron flowers, a species native to New England. The other will feature a poem about Groveland and nature developed in collaboration with Golob and students from the Pentucket Arts Foundation.
