Bourne High School Celebrates Success of Spring Athletics Season

Five Teams Finish in Top 30 of MIAA Statewide Power Rankings; Prepare for State Tournament

BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou, Principal Amy Cetner and Athletic Director Scott Ashworth are pleased to announce that the Bourne High School spring athletic teams have wrapped up successful regular seasons as they prepare for the state tournaments. 

A total of five BHS teams finished in the top 30 of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association end-of-season power rankings and will now prepare for the MIAA spring tournaments. 

The teams include:

• Baseball: End-of-season ranking, 7 in Div. 5
• Girls Tennis: End-of-season ranking, 11 in Div. 4
• Softball: End-of-season ranking, 18 in Div. 5
• Boys Tennis: End-of-season ranking, 21 in Div. 4
• Girls Lacrosse: End-of-season ranking, 28 in Div. 4

The MIAA rankings are statewide for each division, and reflect a new scoring system put in place this year.

“We may be a relatively small school, but these rankings show just how much pride our student-athletes have and how much they care about their sports,” Director Ashworth said. “We are thrilled to have so many teams finish so high in the power rankings, and commend all of our athletes for how hard they worked this season along with being positive student ambassadors for our school and our district.”

At the June 1 Bourne School Committee meeting, several Bourne seniors gave presentations reflecting on their time at BHS. One student, Grace Gobeil (who is the valedictorian of the Class of 2022), spoke about athletics at BHS in addition to speaking on the school’s AP course offerings. In describing the athletics program in Bourne, Gobeil said that she’s impressed with the high percentage of student-athletes at the school.

“There’s such a sense of community with our teams that the entire school gets behind,” Gobeil said. “I’ve personally loved being a part of every team I was on at this school, and it creates such a great outlet for us to be outside and make some of our best friends.”

Gobeil served as captain of the girls tennis, basketball and soccer teams during her time at BHS. She said in addition to her fellow players, the support she has received from coaches has been highly impactful as well. 

“We have such awesome coaches who all care so much about us, not only about how we play and how we do in school but also how we do outside of school both mentally and physically,” she said.  

Tournament Details

Two BHS teams will have home games as part of the MIAA tournament on Monday, June 6, including boys baseball, which will host a game (opponent yet to be determined) and girls tennis, which will host Westport.

Girls lacrosse will host Upper Cape Cod on June 7 in the preliminary round.   

Two teams will travel for their tournament games on June 6, including softball, which will visit Lee, and boys tennis, which will visit Rockland.
