SUDBURY – The Goodnow Library shares that its first Free Little Art Gallery has opened, allowing community members to spread and share art.
The Free Little Art Gallery is based on the Little Free Library, in which visitors may take books, or leave book for others to enjoy.
Sudbury illustrator Bethany Schlegel Shaw suggested the Library install the Gallery. The project was facilitated by Shaw, fellow Sudbury Art Association member Anna Ryan, Library Director Esmé Green, and Ferrell Mackey from the Library’s Sara Sherman NOW Lab.
Community member Beau Schless built the Gallery. Larry Jodrey from the Town of Sudbury Facilities Department installed the box, while community member Kevin Shaw assisted with installation and lighting.
The public is invited to create and donate pieces of art, which can be no more than 4 inches by 4 inches. The public may take art, and are not required to donate as well. Volunteers from the NOW Lab and Sudbury Art Association will curate the Gallery, keeping art organized and adding new art when needed.
Art supply kits are available in the Gallery, courtesy of Take+Create and a grant from the Sudbury Cultural Council. The Library has held one class about creating miniature art, and may hold more in the future.
The Gallery is located to the right of the Library, before the drive-up book drop.
“We are so excited to see this petite project come alive. Thank you to everyone who has made this possible,” Director Green said. “We have many talented Sudbury artists involved, but any work of art can bring joy and meaning to someone, so we encourage the community to take part.”
