Town of Maynard Awarded $250,000 Grant to Upgrade Powder Mill Pumping Station

MAYNARD – Town Administrator Greg Johnson is excited to announce that Maynard has been awarded a $250,000 state grant to aid in planning critically needed upgrades to the Powder Mill Pumping Station and related infrastructure.

“The Pumping Station and main have exceeded their projected design life,” Director of Public Works Justin DeMarco said. “The sewer ‘main’ delivers about 70 percent of the Town’s sewage from the station to the wastewater treatment plant. The main was installed in 1983, leaving the Town at critical risk of system failure.”

The Town and engineers from Stantec Consulting Services Inc. will consider options to upgrade the pumping station and address system deficiencies. These measures will modernize the infrastructure, and provide additional capacity needed for future development anticipated within the Powder Mill Mixed Use Corridor.

The grant will allow the Town to assess current conditions, evaluate alternatives, develop preliminary designs, and seek required permits.

“This is a crucial first step to address Maynard’s sewer deficiencies. In completing this process, the Town will become a much more likely candidate for state funding to support the final design phase and construction. It validates Maynard’s commitment to laying the groundwork for future investment in infrastructure,” DeMarco said.

In 2021 Maynard was awarded a designation as a “Housing Choice Community”. Housing Choice Communities are eligible to apply for exclusive grants from the state if they have demonstrated commitment to advancing sustainable housing in their jurisdiction. Maynard was one of 28 to receive a Housing Choice Communities grant in this latest funding round.

“This grant will allow us to secure our infrastructure, and ensure we maximize the benefit of projected new investment in the Powder Mill Corridor,” Town Administrator Johnson said. “We thank the Baker-Polito Administration for this grant, which will help the Town realize its vision for that area.”
