Town of Bridgewater’s Marathon Park to Undergo Renovations This Month

Park to Close in December While New Equipment is Installed

BRIDGEWATER — Town Manager Michael Dutton and Parks and Recreation Director Charlie Simonds are pleased to report that Marathon Park on Crescent Street will undergo renovations this month.

As part of the renovations, older pieces of playground equipment will be removed and replaced with newer, safer pieces. The money for the purchase and installation of the equipment is being paid for from an anonymous donor in the community. 

The last pieces of equipment were delivered late last month. The park will be closed for the month of December while the old equipment is removed and the new equipment is installed. 

The town hopes to have ground prep completed by the second week of December, installation of the new equipment completed by the third week and final landscaping work completed by the end of the month. The timeline is tentative and could change due to inclement weather. 

“December is a perfect month to close the playground for these renovations, and we hope to have it reopened by 2022,” Director Simonds said. “We may have to wait for the spring to fully reopen, but when we do, this popular park near the center of town will be much safer for the children and families of Bridgewater.”

The full list of equipment includes:

• Four new spring riders (replacing current broken ones)
• New Spin-About (replacing current broken ones)
• New sandbox (both the plastic walls as well as new sand)
• Rubber wear mats for under swings and slides
• Two new benches (to replace two currently broken pieces)
• New age 2-5 play structure
• New woodchips throughout the park

“We are very grateful to the donor who has purchased this equipment and has allowed us to renovate Marathon Park,” Town Manager Dutton said. “We are regularly inspecting and evaluating the park and playground equipment in town and we hope this new equipment that will be installed will be safely enjoyed for years to come.”
