*VIDEO* Avon Fire Department Seeks Call, Full-Time Firefighters

AVON — Town Administrator Gregory S. Enos and Fire Chief Robert Spurr are pleased to report that the Avon Fire Department has released a new recruitment video as the department looks to add new call and full-time members.

The video highlights what makes the department such a positive place to work and also what makes Avon a special community to serve, in the hope of attracting new members.

“We’re really after someone who wants to be trained, learn and serve,” Chief Spurr said. “We do about 1,250 call a year. It’s busy enough to stay interested but this is not a place where you’re typically up all night.”

The video breaks down the differences between a full-time member of the department and a volunteer call member, and what the department is looking for from new recruits. It also explains how a call firefighter position can be a great first step toward becoming full-time later on.

“I ended up getting on the call system here in Avon and from that I moved on to full time,” said Captain Dan Wauhob. “Everyday you’re using your experience, and you’re using your knowledge. This is where I gained my experience and it’s where I decided that this is what I wanted to do.”

The video also highlights the newly-renovated William T. Wheeler Fire Station. The approximately $5.5 million renovation project for the station resulted in a state-of-the-art facility with new kitchen and day room areas, bunk rooms, classroom spaces for training and more.

The department also boasts top-of-the-line turnout gear and apparatus for members.
